Top of the list for most of us is Quito, Ecuador's historic capital, set among volcanic peaks high in the Andes. To the east the mountains descend rapidly through cloud-forests to meet vast Amazon forests that stretch for 2,000 miles from Ecuador to the Atlantic.
All around Ecuador there is plenty of things to do and see. Some of our favourites include Latin America's largest indian markets at Otavalo, Quito's old city, the impressive Incan ruins at Ingapirca, the rickety Devil's Nose train in the central Andes, and the lovely and evocative city of Cuenca to the south. There are excellent wildlife lodges in Ecuador's Amazon, and plenty of scope in the Andes for activities from country walks between Quichua villages and serious treks, to horse-riding along a royal trail to the Valley of Eternal Youth! Ecuador's Pacific beaches may not be the very best in the continent, but pleasant enough to round off a holiday.
And 600 miles out into the Pacific, the Galapagos islands, owned by Ecuador, are one of the most enthralling places for anyone with an interest in nature and wildlife.
It's high time you discovered Ecuador for yourself!
